12 Moons Residence
12 Moons is a new, single-family, one-story residence located in Glen Ellen, California. The residence consists of two connected wings, the main living wing and bedroom wing, which overlooks the rolling hills of Sonoma county. The roof structure consists of steel beams with wood joist infill that support long clear spans and thin cantilevers. A unique characteristic of this structure is Rammed Earth shear walls as part of the lateral system. Because Rammed Earth construction is not yet recognized as a conventional building system, during the permitting process, our team had to focus efforts to develop substantiating evidence to demonstrate that Rammed Earth shear walls meet, or exceed, the structural performance of conventional shear wall systems.
